| Today turned out to be a busy day for District 11. We had seven calls, including motor vehicle extrication, mutual aid for a structure fire, brush fires, fire alarms, and a car fire. Just before 4am District 11 was dispatched into District 9 for a motor vehicle accident with entrapment. Chief Bennett (Dist 9) arrived on scene and confirmed entrapment. A Perth Amboy Police car traveling on Route 1 South was hit as it crossed over Green St. Chief Bennett requested an additional Engine from District 11 to standby during the extrication. Rescue 11 arrived and the crew, led by Captain Comi, worked to remove the victim from the vehicle. Engine 11-3 arrived and the crew, led by Assistant Chief Einhorn, backed up Captain Comi's crew and stood by with a hoseline. The victims were transported to Robert Wood Johnson Hospital in New Brunswick. Tragically, Perth Amboy Police Officer Thomas Raji was pronounced dead at 4:42am. District 11 would like to express our deepest condolences to the family of Officer Raji and to the Perth Amboy Police Department. At around 9:30am Districts 11 and 9 were dispatched for a mutual aid assignment into District 5 for a structure fire at D & J Auto Body on St. George Ave. Our crew was directed to be the F.A.S.T. team. The blaze was sparked by an employee using a torch to strip off a bearing on a heat exchange machine when the particles ignited and spread up the duct work to the roof of the building. At 5:08pm District 11 and 9 was dispatched to a reported vehicle fire on the Garden State Parkway South 133.5. Chief Mellett arrived and established command. The vehicle was just smoldering upon his arrival. An off duty Firefighter knocked down the bulk of the fire before our arrival. Engines 9-6 and 11-2 arrived and stretched a line to extinguish any remaining fire. |
